Two-Column Name Generators: Dark Crystal Edition

Testing design space with more prefix-suffix name generators. Last time I wrote about why I like using these where possible and made one with Italian names as an example. This time let's apply this process to a more fantastical setting.

The Dark Crystal is a good fit for this material because while its naming conventions look a lot like your typical fantasy syllable mashup, the house style is still very distinctive. "Silmaril Bellisaire," for example could walk onstage anywhere in a Vernacular Western Fantasy setting like the Forgotten Realms, but the same can't be said for Thra.

Gelfling Name Generator

Like with my Italian name generator I've disassembled a lot of official Gelfling names and filled in the gaps with sounds that seem to fit their aesthetic, which I would describe as "childlike fantasy played 100% seriously". Because Gelfling names don't appear to be strongly gendered in the fiction, the table is unisex.

Podling Name Generator

Podlings are silly and earthy where the Gelfling are airy and mystical. They’re mostly comedic characters who sing and shout a lot, and because their speech is usually not subtitled Podling language has to be fun to listen to. The Dark Crystal folks solved this by making it full of long, bouncy-sounding words composed of many short syllables. Podlings don't seem to have strong gender distinctions either, so their table is also unisex.

To generate a Podling name, roll d00 1d4+1 times:

Examples: Doopscabub, Voymu, Popopgu, Dotochu, Asobabdi, Yubzo, Mudoditaga, Bopkun, Vopdeetbi

Note: the one named Podling character in the Dark Crystal show has a single-syllable name, "Hup". Let's assume that Podlings with long names sometimes use shorter traveling ones when they have to spend a lot of time among the Gelfling, who can't often be bothered to learn how to pronounce their full names properly. "Mudoditaga" might go by "Mudo" or "Dodi," for example.
