Bones
"I can only die but once"
also funny to cast Eva Green to play a Harry Potter witch instead of the witches she usually plays |
Skills: Curses (advanced) | Stealth (advanced) | Charms (basic) | Fighting (basic) | Herbology (basic)
+1 Shadow
Garbed like wraiths and hailing from the wild and ancient barrow-moors, Clan Bones was nearly extinguished by the forces of the Enemy during the Great War. While the clan produces some of the finest exorcists and ghoul-hunters in the country, some say that such a close brush with death left the survivors changed, and indeed to this day the Boneses have a reputation for fatalism, black humor, and a certain over-familiarity with Dark lore.
You can spend Inspiration to throw off the effects of Fear and Sickness. Any allies who see you do this may test their Courage vs Fear again.
Flaw – Death Wish
The highest honor a Bones can achieve is to die in battle against the forces of the Enemy. When you successfully roll to avoid an attack you may instead choose to take damage. If you do, you gain Inspiration and damage your enemy in return.
Starting Equipment –pick two–
- Battle-hammer (M), stakes, and garlic cloves
- Brace of ivory pistols (M, reload) and bag of silver shot
- Silver animal figurine (+1 to cast the Patronus Charm when held, tarnishes on ud6) and tin of cocoa powder (ud3)
- Cloak woven of burial shrouds (+1 Stealth vs spirits and undead)
- Reliquary box containing an ancestor's bone (+1 Luck, Heavy)
- Silver trumpet, tarnished with age (silent for the living, a clarion for the dead)

Came across these yesterday, and enjoyed them far more than I would have expected to enjoy something that could be labelled 'HP fan RPG'. Succinct, useful and characterful.
ReplyDeletePosting here because I enjoyed it the most; not just for Eva Green. I suspect a vein of faintly-Confucian 'proper ritual' and decorum would be apt for a branch of Hufflepuff, however earthy most of their depiction is - which gels with exorcism.
(I also suspect you've done Ernie Macmillian dirty - stock character though he might have been, as I recall he was fairly decent at applying himself academically!)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I would say "HP fan RPG" is an accurate way to describe this project. I think of it as a kind of elaborate prank on myself, but that doesn't mean it's not also a fan project.
DeleteI considered using either Ernie Macmillan or Hannah Abbot as effectively a "vanilla Hufflepuff" character option, but Ernie's only real distinguishing feature is that he's a bit pompous, and Hannah Abbot has even less. Ultimately I felt that Cedric Diggory had already covered the standard Hufflepuff character in a more interesting way, but that I was a little light on the Scottish highlands flavor. In retrospect though you might be right: all of my Hufflepuffs are very rural, physical archetypes and it might've been nice to have a more academic option. Maybe I'll shuffle things around when I find the time to revise everything after my initial playtest is over.
