Gryffindor: Clan Haggríde

   Haggríde

"stout heart, strong bones"

Sigil: a hippogriff rampant, white on green

Skills: Creatures (advanced) | Herbology (basic) | Fighting (basic)

+3 Strength

Huge, black-eyed, hirsute, and speaking some kind of impenetrable woods-french, the Haggrídes are a gruff and insular clan. They roam the mountain trails and the paths of the Forbidden Forest and converse with the centaurs and spiders as equals, their hands as often upon an axe or crossbow as a wand. Their hearts are full of sorrow and rage against the Enemy, for the first of the Haggrídes carried the bier of The Boy Who Lived at both his first and second deaths. Under the boughs of the Wild Wood black eyes turn towards Hogwarts Castle, and in secret moss-roofed halls great axes are being sharpened. They have not forgotten.

Inspired ActionGiant’s Blood

You may be a lesser son of greater sires, but the red blood of your ancestors still flows in your veins. You can spend Inspiration to perform a feat of great strength or become immune to all offensive spells (save for the Unforgivable Curses) for 1 round.

FlawBackwoods Barbarian

The subtleties and deceits of city-wizards are foreign to you. Enemies should be killed, allies should be supported, and when words must be exchanged they should be loud and to the point.

When you put yourself or your friends at risk by acting impulsively, you gain Inspiration.

Starting Equipment –pick two–

  1. Long-axe (Heavy. Bulky if anyone else tries to use it) and goblin-forged helmet (Armor 1, Ward 1)
  2. Crossbow (H, Reload if anyone else tries to use it) and fairy-lantern
  3. Boarhound (Str 8, Crg -1, Wis 1, Cun 0. Bite 2 dmg)
  4. Moleskin overcoat – 1-in-6 chance of any small, mundane object in one of the pockets. Anything found in the coat will be in bad shape and only good for a single use.
  5. Spidersilk Rope – very strong and light. Become sticky when told to “hold fast”.
  6. Krup – a hedgehog-like creature. Curls up when confronted with poison

Design Notes: I don't think there are too many surprises here, so I'll talk about their flaw (which I actually use a couple of times under different names). There's a certain kind of player who is drawn to the "dumb barbarian" character type, whether because they think it's funny, they don't want to talk much, or they're impatient and primarily interested in combat. It's a common enough thing that people who write about RPGs reference this player type a lot. My brother and a couple of my friends are these kinds of players. It seems to annoy people who have different expectations for a game, but at its base I think it’s borne out of a desire to make sure something concrete happens in a game session. It’s a fine way to play, and unless you're aiming for something very specific I think it's a good idea to provide some kind of in-game outlet for it. The flaw here is meant to appeal to that kind of player.

Names: Norman French inspired - the implication of course is that Hagrid and Madame Maxime got hitched at some point in this setting. Suiting Hagrid's sentimental nature we see that altered forms of Albus and Hermione have been passed down as family names. Yes the pronunciation of "Hagrid" has changed over the generations into a cartoon French version. You probably drop the H.
